Over the summer, one of the Macy's employees who works at a neighboring counter and I decided to do a book swap. I lent her two books in exchange for one, which was probably pretty dumb to begin with, but because she said she was a fast reader, I thought I didn't have anything to worry about. I gave her Tipping the Velvet by Sarah Waters and Surfacing by Margaret Atwood. In return, she gave me Water for Elephants by Sara Gruen.

I got through WfE in just a couple days, reading when I had slices of spare time. Not surprisingly, I finished it before this girl got through the first part of TtV. I wasn't all that concerned, but I didn't want to return her book until I had mine back.

And then shit went down:

When I was packing my stuff during August and the beginning of September for my move, I had to decide what to do with the book. Since I was technically holding it ransom, I decided to pack it instead of simply returning it. So WfE was packed and moved from Bloomington to my new place just outside of downtown Minneapolis where it lived in a box in the basement for two weeks while I lived at my interim place.

We had an event one day at work: Celebrity Look-a-Like. I went as Lady GaGa. Yeah, you can give me crap for that later if you must, but let me continue here. So while I was dressed as GaGa, I had some funky leggings with a long t-shirt over top and a tutu over all that as well. At one point, book girl came over to wash her hands and after washing her hands, she came over to me and sexually harassed me. More than once.

This happened on a Saturday, but I reported what had happened to my manager right away, she left a message for HR, and on Monday Iwas contacted by HR to tell them what happened. After hearing my story they said that they'd take care of things and would let me know how things would go. After a few days, I hadn't heard anything from HR, but I had heard a very interesting slew of rumors going around each and every cosmetic counter. It was clear that no one knew the entire story and I thought it best to not create any added drama, so I didn't open my mouth. At all. I had to work around this girl, we didn't talk. She would wait until another person was on the clock at my store to then ask them who was closing, or how we had been doing for the day. I was completely ignored. I didn't necessarily want to talk to her at all. If you knew this girl, you'd understand that having her not want to talk to you is a good thing. I was just glad that she didn't cause a scene.

But her manager, still not knowing the entire story, stopped talking to me too. She was someone I considered a friend, a confidante. In many ways, she had become my new stand-in Rachel Harris (because you know, no one could ever really, really replace Rachel).So, this woman felt threatened by me going to HR about what happened because she could lose the girl at her counter. Tough shit. If someone acts outside of what is acceptable, especially when it's sexual harassment, they should go under review, shouldn't they?

Though she had been put on a leash, she was still able to keep her job (though this should have been the last straw after all the other shit she's pulled). We continued to ignore each other and I grew used to it. I thought about leaving WfE in a drawer behind their counter with a note that asked for her to return mine to our counter. I didn't do that though, which was stupid because she started calling-in sick a lot, not having proof that she was actually ill, and she got canned. Now she has two of my books and has deleted me from Facebook. I wonder if any of my friends have her phone number, but even still, I really don't want to have to see her to get my books back.

Here I am again.

I'm not promising that I'll be posting as regularly as I used to, but some things need to be here and not posted on my Tumblr (which is where I've been unloading lately). The thing is, with Tumblr, I am a little more apprehensive about posting a long rant since there isn't a way to put the entry behind a cut (just yet, it's being developed). So, here I am.

I've gotten pretty good at avoiding people. It's basically my new hobby. Not everyone is being ignored and I do have good reason to exclude some of these people from my life, but mostly I just start feeling guilty and then I don't even know what to say to people when I do get back in touch with them. Yes, I could start with: I've been sick for two weeks. Legit. I have been feeling like shitty shit shit for much longer than I should, but that isn't the real reason why I'm not calling people back.

There are things I need to sort-out, things that I need to take care of and the people I've shut-out are the people who prod, who just need to know everything that's going on and I don't want to have those conversations.

I hate this because this is what my father does.

Ugh.

My sinuses have been so clogged that the water from my neti pot just sits in one nostril.

I have terrible sunburn, but thankfully Breath of Fresh Air is soothing away the sting and I might be able to sleep tonight.
